Ephesians 5:19-21

Bringing heaven to earth
In the 5
th chapter of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians he wrote of what a “walk in power

looked like when compared to a life of intoxication as he words it one “drunk on wine” (verse 18). A life of intoxication is one that is just seeking to numb out life enough to get through the day. But according to Paul’s words in 5:19-21 we see that a “Spirit filled” or “power filled” life has three evidences:

Vs. 19 Joyfulness
Vs. 20 Thankfulness
Vs. 21 Brokenness
Then from verse 22 through chapter 6 verse 9 Paul gives practical ways in which this “power filled” life is to be applied. Though still looking at the “Spirit filled” life we are seeing that there is a whole other aspect to this “Spirit filled life” and this has to do with application. It has been said many times that “knowledge is the accumulation of truth but wisdom is the application of it”. It is for this reason that Salomon said, “Get wisdom!” A “worthy walk” that Paul admonished in chapter 4:1 is one that is done in God’s:

And this “walking in power applied” deals with the most difficult human relationships we all encounter:
a. Vs. 22-33
Husbands and wives
b. Chap. 6:1-4 Parents and their children

c. Vs. 5-9 Employee’s and employers
Paul had already given the readers of this letter what every walk consists of, “two steps” repeated over and over. And those two steps were seen in chapter 4 verses 22-24 where he told the Ephesian believer’s to “put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man” and “put on the new man which was created according to God”. So it is in all of this that we see what that “new person” looks like in our most personal interactions with our fellow humans. The Christian life isn’t just about waiting around until we go to heaven, it is all about the Christian being actively involved in bringing heaven to earth!
