Matthew 4:12-25

“Seek, Follow, Go”

ww_sq

In Matthew chapter 4:18-22 we read of the second stage of Jesus’ invitation to His future disciples. What I found interesting in this is to see Jesus’ continual progression in His invitation towards them:

  • John 1:35-42 SEEK
  • 4:19 FOLLOW
  • 28:19 GO
  1. First, in John 1:35-42 they came to Jesus seeking Him as the Messiah. The word rendered “followed” in John means that they accompanied Him. It is then that He asks them, “Whom do you seek.” They then say, “Teacher, where are you staying?” and He responds with an invitation “Come see”. They had seen Jesus but had not yet continued with Him. I can relate to this in my own life when I met Christ; I was changed but I was not committed to Him. That is where some people leave it, they go no further with Jesus in their lives.
  2. That brings us to the second call in Matthew 4:18-20. Several months have gone by and these same men are back doing their old job as professional fishermen. They knew Jesus, but now they are being asked to become a “disciple”, a student or follower of Jesus. A person becomes a student of Jesus, be simply “Follow HIM”. Jesus didn’t send them to a school in Jerusalem, He didn’t tell them to read some book, instead He told them to “continually hang out with HIM!”
  3. The last call is found in Matthew Matt. 28:19 with the word GO! That is where they are called to be ambassadors for His kingdom. Again they were out fishing when He came to them. And Jesus sends those who have sought Him, and followed Him, to foreign lands to be His ambassadors. Some Christians stop at the seeking stage and are just content to know about Him. Others move on to the hanging around Jesus stage, and there are some that want all of Jesus and are willing to go where Paul was at when he said in 1 Cor. 11:1 “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.”

How about it saints, how far are you wanting to go in Jesus invitation too you? Are you content to just seek Him, or are you at a place where you really enjoy hanging around Him? Let me make this appeal to you, why not take His invitation to the extreme and travel the world with Him going where He sends you as His ambassadors? I promise your life will be full of glorious adventures and lasting peace as you walk into hearts and lives of people in places you never imagined you’d go!
