Exodus 17:5

How to lead

ww_sqHaving just witnessed our election of a new president I found it interesting to look at the advice and council that Moses wrote down of his own experience of how to lead a divisive nation through the wilderness of life. The book Exodus serves as “leadership Manuel” and if our new president would ask me I would suggest that he spend some time reading it as it offers great council. First, the problem of the nation was not that God wasn’t leading them, it was that their focus was in the way He was taking them instead of Who is taking them! The nation was divided and angrily rioting at the decisions of their new leader. So in Exodus chapter 17 verse 5 God gave Moses four things he could do to lead the nation:

  1. Go on before the people”: Three things come to mind when I read these words:

  1. Don’t be a man pleaser, be a God server! Don’t concern yourself with what the people want, concern yourself with what God wants.

  2. Don’t retreat, advance! You can’t lead people from behind. They need to see you out in front trusting with the Lord so that they will follow.

  3. Get away from those who aren’t trusting the Lord. Moses biggest danger was not from the stones of the people but rather from boulders of doubt.

  1. Take with you some elders of Israel”: Leaders need to surround themselves with people that are like minded. Moses, was not to be a “Lone Ranger” Christian.

  2. Take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river.”: Two things come to mind as I read these words.

  1. The staff represented that which support Moses. What supports us in all that we do is God’s grace. Leaders needs to be constantly aware that God is saying, “Lean on Me and I’ll do all the work!”

  2. Moses had asked what to do with the people and God responded to him by reminding him of the past victories won by totally trusting in Him. As such God is saying, “My grace is sufficient, not just for this situation but for EVERY situation.”

  1. And go.”: Lastly, be a man of action. Talk is cheap get out there and get to it! People can not follow those that are indecisive even if they are. In spite of Israel’s demands and complaining keep on leading them.

This has been Pastor Dale, Blessings!
