“Graceful in grace”

As we are at the beginning of a new year with all the uncertainties of life, I find looking at the words of Jesus in the book of Revelation the most comforting and hope filled. The 20th chapter of the book of Revelation deals with life during the 1000-year reign of Christ upon the earth. At the end of that time satan will cast into hell for eternity, as we will come into eternal life. The 21st chapter answers what heaven will be like from two perspectives:

  1. Vs. 1-8 What life will be like for those in heaven

  2. Vs. 9-27 What heaven will look like

Eternity will be a timeless place where everything that was past is future and very thing future is past because everything is now. In verse 3 we are told the most important part of this new city, “He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people.” The problem with being in this world is that being in Jesus’ presence is constantly being interrupted by our sin; how wonderful it will be when we will no longer have this problem. Then John describes what won’t be with us in the presence of Jesus in eternity in verse 4-5

  1. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes”: What a great picture of the comfort of God.

  2. there shall be no more death”: Gone for ever will be the cure of our rebellion.

  3. nor sorrow”: Those emotions tied to our sin will no longer have a place.

  4. nor crying”: Gone as well will be weeping for our failure

  5. There shall be no more pain”: All such things caused by our sin, even pain shall find no place to roost in heaven.

All such memories well fade into the context of those things God worked in our lives for our good and His glory. Now that’s something to look forward too! Happy New Year!
