“Been Born Again”
The “New Birth” is the theme for the 3rd chapter of John and ought to be the theme of our lives also. Well known British evangelist George Whitefield wrote a letter 1700’s to inventor and statesman Benjamin Franklin with a special request just for old Ben writing, “I find that you grow more and more famous in the learned world. As you have made such progress in investigating the mysteries of electricity, I humbly urge you to give diligent heed to the mystery of the “new birth”. Today just about everyone is familiar with the term “born again”. It has become so popular that it is used for all kinds of situations that have nothing to do with the way that it was originally intended when Jesus first spoke the words to Nicodemus. If a football team has a bad season and the next season performs much better, the sports writers say that the team has been born again. It is to bad that this phrase of Jesus has been hijacked by the world to merely describe a resurgence of better circumstances and more favorable situations instead of a rebirth of the heart! It would do all of humanity a great deal of good to take up George Whitefield’s exhortation to Benjamin Franklin and “give diligent heed to the mystery of the “new birth”
